History/News > How A Photoshoot Works

On a normal shoot I will prepare ideas and content for several features in advance in collaboration with the remit from the instruction editor. Once at the venue, the shoots involve photographing ideally six month's of articles in one week, which for your reference can be up to 2400 images as everything is taken in triplicate. We have to scour the courses for the best holes and backdrops, which ideally best represent the feature we are shooting e.g., bunker, driving, trouble shots etc.

The shoots are scheduled very early in the morning when the light is at its best and no golfers around, then late in the evening when the shadows are long and light good again. A shoot will take several hours then we do the storyboard over lunch for the shoot that evening, although often taken in glamorous locations there isn't normally a lot of time to enjoy playing the course or surroundings. Weather and cloud play a big part in the smooth running of a shoot, if it's too cloudy or rainy the shoot will normally be abandoned till later- hence why locations where the weather is more guaranteed are normally favourites.

Once back in the UK and office the features are turned into the month's relevant article and laid out by the designer and the Instruction editor. Once in an almost finished state I will re proof the text and pictures with the Instruction editor hopefully ensuring we are communicating the swing theory in the very best and understandable fashion.

Here are some samples of behind the scenes images from the first ever TEAM TG features shot at the wonderful Oitavos Golf Club, Lisbon, Portugal in February 02. You will see some funny camera angles to get some dramatic images and create views where the reader can visualise the shots as if they were playing them.
