Robinson & Hemstock Off To Venezuela
October 2009
Robinson Off To VenezuelaEngland squad members Billy Hemstock (Teignmouth, Devon) and James Robinson (Southport & Ainsdale, Lancashire) have been selected to represent the EGU in the biennial Simon Bolivar Cup at Barquisimeto Golf Club in Venezuela on 4th – 7th November.

Hemstock, 25, the current Devon Champion, has enjoyed a successful season but has yet to represent his country at international level.

Nevertheless, in 2009 he has had considerable success in representing the English Golf Union (EGU) with joint second spot in the Chiberta Grand Prix in France, and third places in the Finnish Amateur and the European Amateur where he was the leading English player.

Domestically, Billy finished tied third in the Tillman Trophy, equal seventh in the Berkshire Trophy, reached the last 16 of the English and Spanish amateur championships and finished 12th on the Titleist/Footjoy EGU Order of Merit.

Robinson, 21 (picture © Tom Ward), made his full international debut in the winning England side in the Home Internationals at Hillside in August. Like Hemstock, he has been successful in 2009, winning the Lytham Trophy, tied third in the Hampshire Hog and he also reached the last 16 of the Spanish Amateur.

A semi-finalist in the English Amateur in 2007, Robinson’s other successes this year have been runner-up in the S&A Bowl, fifth in the Pines Trophy and the last 32 in the English Amateur.

The Simon Bolivar Cup is decided over 72 holes of stroke play with the aggregate score of the two players to count.

On the last occasion English players were involved in the Simon Bolivar Cup, in 2005, Robert Dinwiddie and James Ruth, both now professionals, carried the EGU flag.
