Sam’s the man - again
SAM Stuart won his third Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit title in as many weeks thanks to a blistering second round four-under-par 67 in the Calvert Trophy at Ashton & Lea.
And it helped to ease some of the pain for failing to qualify for the matchplay stage of the Amateur Championship at Turnberry where his Lancashire team-mate Tommy Fleetwood lost in the final.
The 20-year-old England player said: “I don’t know why I’m struggling at links golf. I feel a lot more comfortable on parkland courses and my recent performances show.”
Stuart, a member of St Annes Old Links and Chorley, opened with a 73 in wet and windy conditions but the weather was less testing in the afternoon as he reeled on six birdies to beat county colleague Matthew Cox, from Royal Birkdale, by a shot.
Stuart, who is playing in the Midlands Amateur Championship at Sherwood Forest and Worksop next week, leapfrogged Southport and Ainsdale’s James Robinson to go 80 points clear in the merit table.
